A Spirit That Refused to Stay Grounded

Some tattoos are more than just art—they’re stories, memories, and a love that never really leaves us.

Lauren came to Oddity Tattoo & Arts on Main Street in Sarasota looking for a way to honor her friend Rocket, who recently passed. Their bond was built on movement, adrenaline, and community—they skated together in roller derby, pushing each other, laughing, and living out loud.

During one of their adventures, Lauren broke her ankle while roller skating at Rocket’s birthday at the Tampa Skate Park—a moment that now carries even more meaning. The surgery to repair the break left behind scars, but instead of hiding them, she chose to transform them.

Tattoo artist Odi Diaz created a rocket ship launching from her ankle to be placed directly over those scars. It’s more than a nod to Rocket’s name—it’s a symbol of everything they shared: motion, resilience, and a spirit that refuses to stay grounded. “He did everything with his whole heart. He was fierce and strong like a rocket, and loved everyone with the same intensity. I think we could use more people like he was.” says Lauren.

This piece is about healing in more ways than one. It’s about carrying someone with you—not just in memory, but in something visible, permanent, and powerful.
