Microblading Q&A with Ashley Holland

Oddity Tattoo on University now offers microblading services with Ashley Holland. Below she answers some of the most commonly asked questions about the procedure.

Q: What’s the difference between microblading and eyebrow tattooing?

A: The biggest difference between microblading and treating the eyebrow like a tattoo is that our faces are forever changing, after a few years the orientation of your features changes slightly as aging occurs. 3D microblading creates a hair stroke effect that mimics your own hair growth making it look as natural as possible. There are shading options for those who are looking for an ombre brow or a powdered look which is similar to how most people shade their own brows with make-up.

Q: Is it permanent? If not, how long does it last?

A: 3d microblading/shading is semi-permanent and typically lasts for about 2-3years depending on your lifestyle, skin type & how your brows are cared for after the procedure. Proper aftercare of the brows will result in much happier and consistent lines.

Q: How much does it hurt? Are any numbing agents available?

A: Pain is quite minimal during the session; I numb clients for 30mins prior to mapping the brows which substantially reduces pain. The scratching sound is audible to some so I usually suggest bringing earplugs or small earbuds so clients can listen to music. The whole procedure takes roughly 2 hours with numbing & mapping taking up most of the time, the brows themselves only take about 45mins depending on the type of brow we’re creating.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The initial cost is $400 which does include a free touch up, usually about 2-3weeks after the first session the brows are healed enough to touch up. After that most clients won’t need another round until the 2-3 year mark. Cost is subject to change if the client has had prior microblading done in the past.

Q: What can I expect during the healing process? Is there anything I need to avoid?

A: Right after the procedure I apply a thin layer of ointment and that night you’ll begin your own aftercare routine. Never touch your brows without washing your hands! Wash your hands and then apply water to a clean paper towel and gently wipe the brows (you may notice some pigment on the paper towel which is normal) and the main thing to avoid is getting the brows too wet or sweating. Staying away from sweat while living in Florida is hard but your brows will retain so much more color if those things can be avoided. The brows will go through a flaking stage which is also normal, be careful not to pick or scratch at the skin. Letting them flake organically will provide better results. Absolutely NO makeup should be worn directly on the brows until they’ve totally healed.
