Tattoo Healing Timeline: What to Expect from Day 1 to Fully Healed

Tattoo Healing Timeline:

Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but the healing process is just as important as the tattoo itself. While every person heals a little differently, understanding what’s normal can help you care for your tattoo and know when something may need attention.

Here’s what you can typically expect as your tattoo heals.

Day 1: Fresh Tattoo

Your tattoo is an open wound. Your body’s natural inflammatory responses are the first step towards healing. You’ll notice:

• Redness on and around the new tattoo
• Mild to moderate swelling depending on placement
• Tenderness
• Small amounts of blood, plasma and/or ink under the barrier film

Days 2-4: Weeping

Your tattoo will continue to leak some plasma giving it a weeping appearance.  You may also notice:

• Less redness and swelling
• A shiny appearance
• Mild itching

Days 4-7: Peeling Begins

Don’t panic! Your ink isn’t falling out. The design is becoming obscured by layers of dead skin preparing to shed. At this point, you tattoo may:

• Flake, almost like a sunburn
• Feel tight
• Become increasing itchy
• Look dull or cloudy

Removing peeling skin too early can pull pigment from the healing tattoo. DO NOT PICK, PULL OR SCRATCH YOUR HEALING TATTOO!!!

Week 2: The Itchy Phase

Most peeling is complete, but your tattoo may:

• Feel dry
• Continue itching
• Look somewhat faded
• Develop a thin, shiny layer of new skin

Weeks 3-4: Looking Better!

By now, most tattoos will have:

• Stopped flaking for the most part
• Surface skin has healed
• Colors appear brighter
• Fine details become more visible

Weeks 4-8: Deeper Healing and Settling

Even though your tattoo looks fully healed, it may still have collagen reforming beneath the surface. Your skin’s texture will return to normal with vibrant, settled color.

• Keep skin moisturized
• Protect your tattoo with SPF 50+ once fully healed

Signs of a Problem

Contact your tattoo artist/shop or healthcare provider if you experience:

• Increasing redness after several days
• Excessive swelling
• Thick yellow or green discharge
• Fever
• Severe pain
• Red streaking around the tattoo
