American traditional (old school) is built on bold black outlines, a limited palette of saturated colors, and iconic imagery passed down through a century of tattooing. Japanese traditional (irezumi) brings the same boldness to dragons, koi, waves, and full-body compositions. Both share one trait: they’re engineered to age beautifully. The classics:

It depends on size, placement, and color — a classic flash piece on the forearm is a very different project than a Japanese half-sleeve. Consultations are always free: your artist looks at your idea, talks through placement, and gives you an exact quote before anything is scheduled. No surprises, ever.

Why do traditional tattoos age so well?
Bold outlines and high-contrast saturated color hold their structure as ink naturally softens over decades. It’s the same reason 50-year-old sailor tattoos are still readable.

What’s the difference between American and Japanese traditional?
American traditional uses standalone designs — eagles, roses, daggers — with a classic red-yellow-green palette. Japanese traditional builds larger flowing compositions like dragons, koi, and waves, often designed to fit the body’s movement. Several of our artists do both.

Does traditional have to be colorful?
No — bold traditional work in straight black looks incredible and ages just as well. Your artist can show you examples of both at your consultation.

Can I pick from flash?
Absolutely — flash is part of the tradition. Walk in and browse, or bring a classic design you love and your artist will make it their own.
